Meet the Author and Illustrator
NEEN BEAN
Neen Bean is the author and illustrator of "Remember the Squirrel Story" and The Squirrel Story series. Growing up, she was always interested in drawing, creative arts and creative writing. Neen Bean had struggled a lot trying to find what she was good at and had many difficulties of her own learning. One day a friend said to her, "The secret to life is, even though it's difficult you have to stick with something until the end or you will be like a squirrel who can't get it's nuts together before the winter and will be left out the cold." This sparked the inspiration for "Remember the Squirrel Story" and The Squirrel Story series the G rated version of the reality of life.
A lot of thought went into what artistic medium Neen Bean wanted to use to create this series. Crayola watercolor comes with huge challenges, but Neen Bean intentionally chose this medium because she wants kids to look at the images and believe they can make them too. In the digital age, people tend to stop themselves from creating because they don't have the "best" to start with. Neen Bean wants kids to realize it's about using what you have and taking it as far as you can. Crayola watercolor is something most kids play with at one point in their lives and she hopes this will help inspire kids to realize they just need to start.
Chipper the Rescue Squirrel
Chipper was found with his sisters abandoned by their mom. Chipper and his sisters did not get along and needed to be separated. Neen Bean adopted him. He was so young, his eyes were still closed when he went into Neen Bean's care. Neen Bean nursed him until he was ready for hard food. She made many attempts to rehabilitate him back into nature but Chipper refused to stay outside. Chipper was checked out by a vet and is a healthy boy who spends his days playing with Neen Bean. Neen Bean loves to make climbing posts and nesting houses for him to stuff with nuts and toilet paper. Chipper was born in February of 2019.
